David Duerr Honored by ASME for His Contributions to Safety Codes and Standards

David Duerr Honored by ASME for His Contributions to Safety Codes and StandardsNEW YORK, September 10, 2012 —David Duerr, P.E., a resident of Houston, and president of 2DM Associates, Inc., will be honored by ASME. He is being recognized for more than 12 years of active involvement in ASME committees; for spearheading the revision of the 2008 and 2011 editions of BTH-1–Design of Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices and for chairing the BTH Standards Committee with consistent effort and drive; for publishing works that further promote safety codes and standards; and for unwavering advocacy of safety codes and standards activities. He will receive ASME’s Safety Codes and Standards Medal.

The medal, established in 1986, recognizes contributions to the enhancement of public safety through the development and promotion of ASME safety codes and standards or through ASME safety accreditation activity. It will be presented to Mr. Duerr at the BTH Committee Meeting in St. Louis on Sept. 23.

Duerr is founder and president of 2DM Associates, Inc., a consulting engineering firm in Houston that specializes in providing engineering and technical services to the heavy lifting and transportation industry. Over the years, the firm has provided engineering services for a wide variety of lifting and transportation projects in industries as diverse as power generation, manufacturing, petrochemicals, medicine, the space program and high-energy physics research.

He has published numerous papers on heavy lift engineering and transportation engineering in industry periodicals and professional journals, has given talks on at the topic and has presented lectures at the University of Houston and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Duerr is listed in a number of biographical references, including Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.

As ASME member, Duerr is vice chair of the BTH Standards Committee, Design of Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices. He serves as an alternate on the B30 Safety Standards Committee for Cableways, Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Hooks, Jacks and Slings; and is a member of the B30.1 (Jacks, Industrial Rollers, Air Casters and Hydraulic Gantries) and B30.20 (Below-the-Hoof Lifting Devices) subcommittees.

Duerr earned his bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering at Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in 1975; and his master’s degree in civil engineering at the University of Houston in 1985. He is a registered professional engineer in 16 states, ranging from Alabama to Washington, including Texas.
