Kornel F. Ehmann Honored by ASME for Paper on Machine Tools, Gages and Measuring InstrumentsNEW YORK, June 11, 2012 – Kornel F. Ehmann, Ph.D., a resident of Evanston, Ill., and professor at Northwestern University, was honored by ASME.  He was recognized for a paper he co-authored titled “An Investigation on Deformation-Based Surface Texturing.”  He received the Society’s Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award.

The award, established in 1954, recognizes the best paper or papers clearly concerned with, or related to the design or application of machine tools, gages or dimensional measuring instruments.  It was presented to Dr. Ehmann during the International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference, which was held in Notre Dame, Ind., June 4 through 8.

Ehmann is a James N. and Nancy J. Farley professor in manufacturing and entrepreneurship, and a professor in the department of mechanical engineering at Northwestern University.  He joined the faculty at Northwestern as an associate professor in 1985, after four years as an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Ehmann is also an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; adjunct chair professor at Chung Yuan Christian University (Chung-Li, Taiwan); distinguished honorary professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur; and a visiting professor at the University of Belgrade, Serbia.

His main research interests are in the interrelated areas of machine tool structural dynamics, metal cutting processes and dynamics, computer control of machine tools and robots, accuracy control in machining and micro/meso-scale mechanical manufacturing.  General Dynamics, General Electric, General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, IBM, Ingersoll Milling Machine Co., SpeedFam, American Tool Co., Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Baxter and others have supported his work.

Ehmann has published more than 240 articles, given numerous keynote talks, and has supervised more than 40 master’s and 40 Ph.D. students.  He holds one patent, with four pending.

An ASME Fellow, Ehmann is currently the technical editor of the Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering (formerly the Journal of Engineering for Industry).  Prior to assuming the role of technical editor, he was associate editor (1994-2000).  He served as chair (1995) of the Society’s Manufacturing Engineering Division (MED) and was on the Blackall and Ennor Awards Committee (2000-03).  He was co-chair/organizer (with Jian Cao) of the ASME International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference and the co-located Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers/ASME International Conference on Materials and Processing, held at Northwestern University in 2008.  He was honored with MED’s Outstanding Service Award in 2009.

Among his honors, Ehmann was a distinguished visiting fellow (2009) of The Royal Academy of Engineering (at Cardiff University), and was awarded SME’s Gold Medal (2008).

Ehmann earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering at the University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in 1970 and 1974, respectively.  He earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1979.

About ASME ASME helps the global engineering community develop solutions to real world challenges. Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME is a not-for-profit professional organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing and skill development across all engineering disciplines, while promoting the vital role of the engineer in society. ASME codes and standards, publications, conferences, continuing education and professional development programs provide a foundation for advancing technical knowledge and a safer world.
