ASME’s Industry Advisory Board Congressional Outreach Day
On April 9th a group of esteemed members from the 2024 ASME Industry Advisory Board (IAB) participated congressional meetings on Capitol Hill. The ASME Global Public Affairs team, acting as the liaison between these industry stakeholders and Congress, organized a series of over 20 congressional meetings where ASME members engaged directly with their representatives to discuss policy issues affecting their industries and respective communities.
The ASME Washington Visitation program covers policy topics impacting engineering professionals, including federal research and development (R&D) funding, STEM education initiatives, domestic manufacturing, and the exploration of emerging technologies such as clean hydrogen and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The program seeks to include perspectives from a wide range of mechanical engineering industries.
ASME volunteers had the opportunity to meet directly with several Members of Congress, including Representatives Jennifer McClellan (VA-4th), Glenn Thompson (PA-15th), and Brian Mast (FL-21st). ASME's leadership, including Michael Johnson, Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), Jeff Patterson, Chief Operating Officer (COO), and Chrstine Reilley, Managing Director of Strategy and Innovation, also played instrumental roles in hosting the group and representing ASME on Capitol Hill.
Following outreach meetings, the IAB convened their 2024 Spring Meeting, including remarks from Dr. Laurie Locascio, Undersecretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), who shared valuable perspectives on U.S. standards and technology development priorities. The IAB also hosted a distinguished speaker from the Department of Energy’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office Codes & Standards Program Manager Neha Rustagi, including an update on the DOE’s Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs program.
The agenda also included a dinner event held at the historic Capitol Hill Club, where Representative Rob Wittman (VA-1st) addressed IAB members, providing insights on how Congress is approaching a range of emerging technology developments. The event exemplified the pivotal role that ASME's Global Public Affairs team plays in shaping the discourse on Capitol Hill and fostering collaborative relationships that drive innovation and progress within the engineering community.
