Microelectromechanical Engineering Division
MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) are defined as a miniature device or an array of devices combining electrical, mechanical, optical, chemical and/or biological components fabricated via integrated circuit or other similar manufacturing techniques.
About
MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) are defined as a miniature device or an array of devices combining electrical, mechanical, optical, chemical and/or biological components fabricated via integrated circuit or other similar manufacturing techniques. It is by it’s very nature a multi-disciplinary field
Research, insight, and then applications of MEMS will shape the basis for the creation of technologies that will impact areas as diverse as computing, information technology, biomedical technology, the environment, along with energy, transportation, robotics,. manufacturing, deep space studies, and national security.
Since its start in the late 1960s, the MEMS field has been growing rapidly, especially since 1989. Currently, patents in MEMS are being issued at a rate of over one per day!
The MEMS Division will work towards the goals of: providing a focal point for the Mechanical Engineers entering and practicing in the MEMS field; Facilitating interaction and discussion among the MEMS community and generate opportunities for collaboration in order to spawn and maintain creativity in the field; Identifying the needs and problems of the MEMS community and bring together appropriate people to address them; Provide a platform to generate standards and guidelines for MEMS processes and technologies; Educate and inform engineers and scientists in various fields of the ongoing developments in the MEMS field; Help train new, multi-disciplinary MEMS researchers to enhance the growth of the field.
Mission and Vision
Our vision is to be the leading global professional community advancing innovation, collaboration, and technical leadership in MEMS technologies, enabling transformative solutions that benefit society through research, education, and engineering practice.

Student Paper Award Program
The ASME MEMS Division annually recognizes outstanding scholarly contributions presented at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) through a series of paper awards. These honors include three Best Paper Awards, three Innovative Paper Awards, and three Global Impact Paper Awards, all presented each year during IMECE. To be eligible for consideration, the first author of the paper must be a current student enrolled at a recognized university at the time of submission. All papers submitted for inclusion in the ASME IMECE proceedings, the eligibility requirements are automatically considered. The submitted manuscripts undergo a rigorous peer-review process and are subsequently evaluated by the MEMS Division Award Selection Committee, which selects the most meritorious papers based on criteria such as technical quality, originality, innovation, and potential impact on the MEMS research community and society at large. The student author receives $350 for a paper award towards the ASME IMECE registration fee.
Description of the Best Paper
The Best Paper Award recognizes the highest-quality paper submitted for publication in the ASME IMECE proceedings. This award honors a manuscript that demonstrates exceptional technical excellence, originality, clarity of presentation, and significance to the field of Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS). All eligible papers submitted to the ASME IMECE proceedings are carefully reviewed and evaluated by the MEMS Division Award Selection Committee through a rigorous and impartial assessment process. Based on this comprehensive review, the committee selects the paper that best exemplifies outstanding scholarly contribution and overall excellence for receipt of the Best Paper Award.
Description of the Innovative Paper
The Innovative Paper Award recognizes the most inventive and forward-looking research paper submitted for publication in the ASME IMECE proceedings. This award honors a manuscript that introduces novel concepts, methodologies, designs, or applications that significantly advance the state of the art in Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS). All eligible papers submitted to the ASME IMECE proceedings are thoroughly reviewed by the MEMS Division Award Selection Committee using a rigorous evaluation process. Based on criteria such as originality, creativity, technical merit, and potential to inspire future research and development, the committee selects the paper that best exemplifies innovation for receipt of the Innovative Paper Award.
