Quiz: How Do 4DX Theaters Work?

From moving seats to perfectly timed effects, how much do you know about the engineering behind 4DX theaters?
Over the past 10 years or so, 4DX theaters have steadily gained popularity. The immersive, sensory movie experience has actually made it to market in our lifetime, which feels a little wild when you think about it. Filmmakers have been inspired to pull this off for decades--for example, in the 1960 film The Tingler, wired seats delivered small electric shocks to the audience. The idea isn’t new, but early attempts couldn’t quite compare to what 4DX is doing now.

When you first take your seat, the water on/water off button glows at you a little ominously. A sudden blast of air hits you in the face. The first punch in the back catches you off guard. It’s fun, slightly chaotic, and occasionally feels like the seat has got it out for you personally. Underneath all that is a coordinated system of mechanics, controls, and timing. Ever wonder how these seats can literally kick your butt? Test your knowledge with this ASME quiz.
