Infographic: The Biofuel Belt
Ethanol fuel production is concentrated in just a few states. These six states—Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, and South Dakota—are among the largest consumers of ethanol, as well. Minnesota, for instance, has over 450 filling stations offering E85, a blend containing between 51 and 85 percent of this biofuel. Promissed as a national energy security solution, this alternative fuel accounts for no more than 10 percent of motor fuel sold in the U.S. Its production has stalled, but the debate as to whether ethanol is a sustainable and cost-effective alternative fuel has not been settled.
